If you work with people for a living, you already know the feeling. You finish a full day of sessions and you are not tired in the normal way. You are hollowed out. You gave good attention to everyone who needed it, and somewhere in there you lost track of yourself. Learning how to protect your energy as a healer is not about caring less. It is about being able to keep caring this much for twenty more years without it costing you your own well.
This is written for the people who hold space for others. Bodyworkers, therapists, coaches, nurses, teachers, Reiki practitioners, and the friend everyone leans on. The ones whose gift is exactly the thing that wears them down.
Why healers absorb more than most
The same sensitivity that makes you good at this work is what leaves you porous. You feel the room. You notice the thing under the thing someone is saying. That attunement is a real instrument, and it does not have an off switch you can flip between clients.
So without some care, you end up carrying what was never yours to carry. A client’s grief rides home with you. A hard session sits in your chest for days. None of that means you are doing it wrong. It means the channel is open, and an open channel needs tending.
How to protect your energy as a healer without closing your heart
Most of the advice out there gets this backwards. It tells you to armor up and detach, to build a wall so nothing gets in. But you did not come to this work to be behind a wall, and a client can feel the difference between a practitioner who is present and one who is bracing against them.
There is another way to think about it. You can stay wide open and still not merge with what you are witnessing. Picture a window rather than a wall. The light comes through and you see clearly, but the weather stays outside. Protecting your energy is learning to let care move through you without soaking into you. Your heart stays open. Your boundaries just get honest.
Before a session: land in your own body first
The most common mistake is starting a session before you have actually arrived. You rush in from the last thing, still holding the phone call and the traffic, and you reach for the client from a scattered place.
Take two minutes first. Feel your feet. Take a few slow breaths that go all the way down. Ask yourself a plain question: whose is this, and what is actually mine to hold today. You are not building a fortress. You are just remembering where you end and the other person begins, so you can meet them from steady ground instead of getting pulled off yours.
During a session: let it move through, not from
While you are working, notice where you are sourcing from. If you feel yourself pushing your own energy out to fix or rescue someone, that is the fast road to depletion. The shift is subtle but it changes everything. You are not the supply. You are the conduit.
Good practitioners let the work move through them, staying connected to something larger than their own reserves. This is one reason so many bodyworkers and therapists eventually train in an energy practice. It gives the giving somewhere to come from that is not just you.
After a session: clear before the next one
Residue is real. You need a way to set down what you picked up before you carry it into the next hour or the drive home. It does not have to be elaborate. Wash your hands with a little attention, or step outside for a minute of real air. Some practitioners have a phrase they say to themselves to mark the close, something like “that was theirs, this is mine.”
The point is to make it a ritual, not an afterthought. A small, repeatable act of putting it down is worth more than a grand cleanse you only do when you are already fried. If the residue has been building for a while and clearing between sessions is not touching it anymore, we went further into that in what your nervous system is asking for.
The daily baseline that makes the rest work
You cannot protect your energy in the session if your tank is empty going in. The between-client practices only hold if there is a daily floor under them. This is the quiet maintenance work, the energetic hygiene that keeps you from running on fumes: real sleep, time in nature, movement, and moments where you are the one receiving instead of giving. We wrote about why that floor matters, and why rest by itself does not rebuild it, in burnout recovery for caregivers.
Guard your own refill time the way you guard your clients’ appointments. It is not indulgence. It is the thing that lets you keep showing up open.
Where Reiki fits
For a lot of healers, a self-practice is the missing piece. Reiki is one path to it. At Level 1, you learn to give Reiki to yourself, which is exactly the receiving-instead-of-giving that most practitioners never get enough of. It becomes a daily way to clear your own system and come back to center, on your own two hands, without needing to book anything.
To be clear about scope, Level 1 is self-treatment only. Working on clients with Reiki comes at Level 2. But the self-practice alone is often what steadies a healer who has been pouring out for years. You can see the whole pathway on our Reiki training page.
A few honest questions
Does protecting my energy mean I will feel less connected to my clients?
Usually the opposite. When you are not quietly overwhelmed, you have more room to be present. Clients feel met by a practitioner who is grounded, not one who is bracing.
Is this just for energy workers, or for any helper?
Any helper. Therapists, nurses, teachers, coaches, and caregivers all carry other people’s states. The practices here apply whether or not you ever touch an energy modality.
How do I know if I am absorbing too much?
A couple of honest signs: you dread sessions you used to love, or you cannot stop thinking about a client long after they have gone home. When rest alone stops touching the tiredness, that is your nervous system asking for better boundaries, not a sign to quit.
If you have been running on empty
You do not have to choose between doing this work and staying well. If you want to receive for a change, a Reiki session is one of the simplest ways to let someone else hold the space while you set it all down. And if a daily self-clearing practice is what you are missing, learning self-Reiki through Level 1 gives you a tool you carry with you for good.
