You are probably not looking for a life coach because you want to optimize anything. You are looking because you are tired in a way that sleeping in does not touch, and somewhere in the back of your mind you have started to wonder whether this is just what your life is now.
Shopping for a life coach for burnout is a strange task to attempt while burned out. It costs energy you do not have to sort through people who mostly sound the same on their websites. So here is the honest version. What this kind of work can actually do for depletion, and what to ask before you hand anyone your money. There is also a section on when the right call is a doctor or a therapist rather than a coach, because sometimes it is.
Burnout is not a motivation problem, so most coaching aims at the wrong target
Most coaching rests on a quiet assumption. It assumes you know what you want and are simply not doing it consistently, so the tools are goals, accountability, structure, and a weekly check on whether you did the thing you said.
Those tools work beautifully on a full tank. On an empty one they arrive as one more person waiting on you.
By the time someone calls us about burnout, they rarely have a clarity problem. They can describe their situation with painful precision. They know which commitments are bleeding them and roughly what a saner year would look like. What they cannot seem to do is get their body to go along with any of it.
That gap is the actual problem, and it is not the gap most coaching is built to close.
The kind of coaching that makes burnout worse
Worth naming plainly, because you will run into it:
- Coaching that treats exhaustion as a mindset to reframe. You cannot affirm your way out of a depleted system. Being told to try mostly adds shame on top of the tiredness.
- Coaching that opens with a big vision exercise. Casting a five-year vision from the bottom of a burnout is not inspiring. It is nauseating.
- Coaching that stacks a morning routine onto a life that is already too full. New habits cost energy long before they return any.
- Coaching that never involves your body. If the depletion is physical, and it usually is by the time you are searching, then talking about it keeps you hovering one level above where it actually lives.
None of that is a knock on coaching generally. It is a knock on using tools built for momentum on someone who has none.
What changes when burnout is the reason you called
The first move is subtraction. Before anything gets added to your week, something comes off it. That is often the hardest session, because most people arrive hoping to be given a system rather than permission.
The pace is slower on purpose. A person running on empty who is handed a full plan will either abandon it in nine days or white-knuckle it and end up further behind. So the work goes at the speed your system can actually absorb, which is usually one real change at a time.
Your body is in the room, not as a metaphor. Some weeks the useful thing is talking it through. Other weeks you spend most of the hour on the mat, letting your system come off high alert long enough to remember what settled actually feels like, because nobody makes a good decision from inside an alarm.
And the honest arithmetic gets done. How much you have to give in a week is a real number rather than a mood, and most people running on fumes have never sat down and worked out what theirs is. We went into that number, and where giving comes from in the first place, in how to give without burning out. It is worth reading on its own even if you never book anything.
What to ask a life coach for burnout before you hire them
You are allowed to interview the person you are considering paying, and anyone good will be glad you did. If you want the general version of this, we wrote separately about what a holistic life coach actually does. The five below are the burnout-specific ones.
“What is your first move with someone who has nothing left?”
Listen for whether they start by taking something off your plate or by putting something on it. If the answer is a goal-setting exercise, keep looking.
“How do you work with the body?”
They do not have to do what we do. But burnout lives in a tired body, and a coach with no answer here can only reach the part of you that is already exhausted from thinking.
“What do you not work with?”
A coach who cannot name their own limits crisply is a risk. You want someone who will tell you when you need a different professional, and who does not treat saying so as losing a client.
“What happens if I miss a week because I am wiped?”
The answer tells you whether their structure was built for a depleted person or an energetic one. Burnout recovery does not run in a straight line and the container has to hold that.
“Have you been here yourself?”
Not required, and plenty of excellent practitioners have not. But it changes the quality of the listening, and you will hear the difference in how they answer.
When a coach is the wrong call
We are not licensed therapists and we do not diagnose or treat mental health conditions. That is not a disclaimer at the bottom of a page. It is a real boundary that shapes who we can help.
See a doctor first if the tiredness is new, severe, or came on without an obvious cause. Plenty of things that look exactly like burnout are thyroid, anemia, sleep apnea, long COVID, or a medication effect, and no amount of good coaching will touch any of those. Getting bloodwork is not an overreaction.
Start with a therapist if you are carrying active trauma, or if you have been low for months rather than tired. The same goes if the flatness has gone past exhaustion into not caring about things you used to love. Those need clinical care, and coaching alongside it can be good, but coaching instead of it is not. If you are in crisis in the US, call or text 988.
If you are genuinely unsure which door is yours, we walked through the signs for each in coaching vs therapy.
Questions people ask
How long is the coaching container?
One 90-minute session a week, twelve weeks at minimum. That length is not a sales structure. It is roughly what it takes for a pattern that set over years to start loosening, and a handful of good conversations will not do it.
Do I have to know what I want before we start?
No. Most people arrive able to describe the problem in detail and unable to say what they would want instead. Working that out is part of the twelve weeks rather than a prerequisite for booking.
Can we do this remotely?
Yes. Most of what happens in a session travels over video without losing much, and many of our coaching clients work with us that way. Sound healing is the exception, since it needs the actual instruments and the space around them. We work with people across Los Angeles and well past it.
A place to start
If you are not ready to talk to anyone yet, start smaller and start free. Our 7 Days, 7 Chakras email course gives you one short practice a day for a week, and a guided morning meditation when you join. It is a real place to begin and it asks almost nothing of you, which is the point when you have little to give.
When you do want to talk it through, the discovery call is free and runs a full hour. It is a conversation, not a pitch. You describe what is actually going on, and we say plainly whether this is the right kind of help for it. If the answer is no, we would rather tell you that on the call than take you on. You can read more about the work on our holistic coaching page, or book the free consult and we will take it from there.
You do not have to arrive with a plan. Arriving tired is enough.
